Autism Waiver Definition of Family Consultation

Family Consultation is simply the counseling services provided to family of children with autism. For the purposes of this service, “family” is defined as the person who lives with or provides care for a person with autism, and may include a parent, spouse, children, relatives, foster family, or in-laws. Scheduling for family consultation services is variable and dependent on the child’s needs as well as the family’s desire for the service.

Some specific autism waiver regulations on IISS are as follows:

  • “Family” does not include persons employed to take care of a person with autism.
  • Families cannot ask an autism waiver Provider for family training solely to have someone train and/or supervise the technicians who provide IISS to the individual.
  • Supervision of technicians MAY NOT occur during family training hours.

Services Provided during Family Training include:

  • Individualized, hands-on training and instructions to the child’s family about the interventions they may use with their child in the home and the community.
  • Training to assist the family help the child acquire, retain, or improve skills such as communication skills.
  • Training to assist the family help the child identify and respond to dangerous situations as well as making safety decisions.
  • Other necessary training/instructions to assist the family help the child in a wide variety of areas that directly affect the child’s development and ability to reside as independently as possible.

During Family Consultation, the Family Consultant is expected to:

  • Review the individual’s progress with the family in order to identify strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement.
  • Address any family challenges and difficulties that may be affecting how the treatment plan program is being implemented.
  • Assess the individual’s self injury, level of compliance, and/or aggression; and assist the family and team by using appropriate behavioral interventions that encourage positive behavior.
  • Review the child’s treatment plan with the family in order to assure that the family understands the intent of the program and continues to learn to provide consistent and effective care.
  • Ensure teamwork between the family and the caregivers and help to modify interventions and fade prompting as the individual’s abilities change.
  • Explain and model to the family, as well as the team, how to provide the interventions of new and existing programs in order to support on-going skill development.
  • Provide caregivers an opportunity to freely discuss and verbalize any challenges they are experiencing that significantly impact the methods and approach being used to reach and teach the individual.
